These days, children are fortunate enough to have fire drills and fire safety events take place at their school. However, it is important to reiterate fire safety at home. Most fire related deaths and injuries can be prevented by educating yourself and your child on fire safety. Here are some basic tips to keep you and your child safe in the event of a fire:

  • Keep all matches and lighters out of the hands of children. If possible, keep these sources of fire in locked drawers
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher and keep it out of the reach of small children
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Remember to replace the batteries once a year and test them periodically.
  • Teach your child the “stop, drop, and roll” technique and to never hide during a fire as it will be harder to find and save them
